Los Angeles Police Launch Investigation into Matthew Perry’s Death

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the death of actor Matthew Perry.

Matthew Perry, known for his role in the popular TV sitcom Friends, passed away in October due to “acute effects of ketamine,” according to medical officials.

The investigation aims to determine how Matthew Perry acquired the anaesthetic ketamine found in his system.

Drowning was also noted as a contributing factor, and the death was classified as accidental.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed its collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Agency and the US Postal Inspection Service on the investigation into the 54-year-old actor’s death.

Details about the progress of the investigation, which was first reported by TMZ, remain unclear, including who has been interviewed.

Perry was discovered unresponsive in his pool at his Los Angeles home on October 28 and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In December, the LA County medical examiner’s office reported “high levels of ketamine” in his post-mortem blood specimen.

Senior deputy medical examiner Raffi Djabourian identified coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a medication for opioid use disorder, as additional factors in Perry’s death.

“Drowning is likely due to submersion in the pool as he became unconscious; coronary artery disease exacerbates the myocardial effects of ketamine on the heart,” Djabourian stated.

At the time of his death, Perry was undergoing medically supervised ketamine treatments for depression and anxiety, though his last prescribed treatment was about ten days prior.

During his peak fame, Perry struggled with addiction to painkillers and alcohol, frequently attending rehabilitation clinics.

In a 2016 interview with BBC Radio 2, he revealed that he could not remember three years of filming Friends due to his substance abuse.

Following various treatment attempts, Perry wrote in his memoir that he had been mostly sober since 2001, with “about 60 or 70 mishaps” along the way.
